REFRACTIVE SURGERY

Corneal refractive surgery aims to focus light properly on the back of the eye by altering the curvature of the cornea to improve vision. This is for persons who have refractive errors, myopia (short-sightedness), hyperopia (far-sightedness), astigmatism, presbyopia (difficulty reading small print that comes with advancing age)

Persons who have to wear glasses or contact lenses to see clearly can choose to have refractive surgery, this serves to reduce or eliminate their dependence on glasses/contact lenses for good vision. Refractive surgery is a painless and bloodless surgery, that can be done on an outpatient basis.

Cornea and Refractive Surgery

This department is led by internationally qualified and trained specialists with years of experience in Cornea and refractive surgery. At Eye Foundation Hospital, innovative and advanced technology is integrated with personalized and compassionate care in the management of our patients.

Every patient is assessed, and tailor-made treatment options as offered, taking into consideration their needs and expectations.

CATARACTS INCLUDING LASER-ASSISTED SURGERY

Cataracts are the opacification of the crystalline lens. Simply put, they gradually make the vision cloudy preventing the individual from seeing distant objects and gradually affecting reading too.

It may appear whitish, and everyone around can see it, some don’t have the typical whitish look, and people around don’t see it.

It can affect adults as well as children.

The most common cause is aging. However, it can also be caused by some eye infection/ inflammation, a blow to the eye or something hitting the eye, some medication use, and even the use of bleaching creams.

Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is the process of removing the cataract (cloudy lens) from the eye and replacing it with an artificial intra-ocular lens so that the individual can see again. It is one of the most successful procedures in the world.

It can be done in children and adults.

There are different forms of cataract surgery and the best for each individual patient would be advised. Small incision cataract surgery and phacoemulsification of cataracts are the 2 most commonly performed procedures.

Cataract Lasers

Laser-assisted cataract surgery is available at Eye Foundation Hospital.

Also, a patient who has had cataract surgery in the past may need a laser procedure to improve the vision if an “after-cataract” (Posterior Capsular Opacification) has developed.

An “after-cataract” or a posterior capsule opacity may cause the vision to start getting poor again after a cataract surgery has been done in the eye.

It’s a simple procedure done with a YAG laser in the clinic setting and takes less than 10 minutes, this makes the vision clear again.

PAEDIATRIC SURGERY

We offer surgeries for the following conditions;

  • Blocked tear ducts (Congenital/ acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction)
  • Congenital and Childhood Cataracts
  • Congenital and Childhood Glaucoma
  • Droopy eyelids (ptosis)
  • Retinopathy of prematurity
  • Childhood and adults Strabismus (Eye deviation)

Laser procedure/ laser surgical services:

We offer laser services for the following conditions;

  • Posterior capsular Opacity for Children 7-18 years old
  • Congenital/ acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction-Laser Dacryocystorhinostomy

Strabismus Surgery

Strabismus surgery is indicated where there is failure of the above options to resolve the strabismus. It can also be recommended if the above options are unlikely to work at the time of presentation. Most times, surgery is done on both eyes even if the strabismus is present on only one eye.

The goal of Strabismus surgery is to align the eyes so that deviation is almost unnoticeable. These procedures should improve the visual function and cosmetic appearance of the eyes.

RETINA INCLUDING MACULAR HOLE SURGERY

Retinal surgeries are highly specialized ocular surgeries involving the use of sophisticated pen-tip-sized probes and light sources under high magnification to directly visualize and treat the retina. Retinal detachment surgery is most commonly done, and it involves

  • Entry into the back of the eye through 3 pen-tip-sized probes
  • Visualization of the retinal detachment under high magnification provided by the operating microscope
  • Surgical removal of the gel at the back of the eye through the probes (vitrectomy)
  • Flattening of the retinal into position by draining the fluid behind it
  • Closure of the retinal tear with LASER or Cryotherapy
  • Supporting the retina with air, gas, or silicone oil

In macula holes, a thin membrane in front of the macula is carefully peeled and used to cover the hole after the vitreous has been removed.
