Education and Training
KHEFA – Kunle Hassan Eye Foundation Academy
Apart from intervention involving direct care to patients, Eye Foundation Hospital also focuses on ensuring a sustainable development of human resources and skilled personnel to fill the gaps in dearth of human resources in Ophthalmic care – ophthalmologists, ophthalmic technicians and assistants. This focus helps Eye Foundation Hospital contribution to capacity building activities for promoting greater access to eye care across Nigeria and Africa.
The Kunle Hassan Eye Foundation Academy oversees training for ophthalmologists, residents, fellows, mid-level ophthalmic practitioners (MLOPs), optometrists & ophthalmic nurses. KHEFA’s initial activities has been clinical training but its mandate and scope is being expanded to enable it to scale up and promote more visibility and service offerings to include a non-clinical audience.
Vision: To be a Centre of academic excellence in eye healthcare
Mission: To develop leaders and international best practice in eye care through training, research and educational excellence.
Background
Deseret Community Vision Institute (DCVI) was set up as the training arm of the Eye Foundation Hospital Group to oversee the training for ophthalmology residents and fellows, mid-level ophthalmic practitioners (MLOPs), optometrists, and ophthalmic nurses and other allied ophthalmic professionals.
Over the years, DCVI has successfully run a mid-level ophthalmic technician programme that has graduated over 100 mid-level ophthalmic practitioners. It also produced the first Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (IJACAPHO) certified Community Ophthalmic Assistants (COA) in Nigeria. The Institute has also trained over 15 fellows, 35 ophthalmic residents, and 100 ophthalmic nurses.
As part of efforts to enhance the reach of its’ training and education activities, DCVI has been revamped and restructured into a full-fledged academy now known as The Kunle Hassan Eye Foundation Academy.
