Two Residents of the Eye Foundation Hospital successfully completed their 5-year residency programme in April 2023. We congratulate Dr Ahmed-Muil and Dr Oladeji on the completion of their residency training programme.

Dr Ahmed-Muil and Dr Oladeji both share some thoughts about their experience:

REDUCING THE BURDEN OF GLAUCOMA BLINDNESSS THROUGH TRAINING
KHEFA conducted its third annual training in Glaucoma Drainage Device Procedure (GDD) in April & May 2023. The training targeted Glaucoma specialists and ophthalmologists with interest in Glaucoma research and care in Nigeria. The trainees were selected from various geo-political zones of Nigeria.

Over the years, the training has been done in partnership with Cure Glaucoma Foundation (a US-based organization dedicated to preventing vision loss related to glaucoma by making a global impact in glaucoma research and care).

The surgical hands on training took place at the Eye Foundation Community Hospital (EFCH) Ijebu Mushin, Ogun State & Gwarinpa Abuja centres from April 20th to 22nd and 24th to 26th May 2023 respectively. A total of 25 patients benefitted from the surgeries carried out by the trainees in 2023. This brings the total number of patients treated since inception of the programme to 110.

Some of the trainees from the first edition held in 2019 volunteered as faculties for this edition. This is a welcome sustainable approach to capacity development to reduce the burden of Glaucoma.

If you are interested in participating in the next edition in 2024, send an email to academy@eyefoundationhospital.com.

TRAINING FOR OPHTHALMIC NURSES

KHEFA hosted four ophthalmic nurses in training from the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Edo State Nigeria. It was a 4-week training and exposure programme between May 15th and June 19th 2023. The major objective of the posting was to expose the trainees to community ophthalmology.

During the programme, the nurses were introduced to outreaches at Eye Foundation Community Hospital and had exposure to community ophthalmology, as well as best practices in the field of ophthalmology.

Some participants had this to say about the session:
** "The Eye Foundation Hospital clinic is very conducive for learning and theatre facilities are well equipped. This made this clinical posting experience very relevant to course of study" - E.P

** "The clinic and theatre facilities made the duration of the training sufficient to obtain the experience required during any clinical posting." I.R

** "The outreach experience was an eye-opening experience and very beneficial to this posting" - E.J
